How to build your first vertical AI agent
There are plenty of ways to build an AI agent today — open-source stacks, orchestration frameworks, full-code platforms, and no-code builders. Some let you string together multiple agents. Others let you fine-tune behavior from scratch.

For this example, we’ll keep it grounded and practical. We’ll use Botpress as the orchestration layer, and connect it to a raw language model like GPT, Claude, or Gemini — then show how to turn that generic LLM into a vertical agent that’s scoped, integrated, and ready for real tasks.
If you’ve already worked with tools like CrewAI, LangGraph, or AutoGen, the approach will feel familiar — but here, the focus is on going from a blank LLM to a business-ready system.
1. Start with setting up the agent
Pick a task that’s specific, repeatable, and clearly defined. Things like appointment booking, intake flows, or lead qualification are perfect starting points.

Head over to your Botpress dashboard, create a new bot, and define its purpose right away. Give it a short description like “Multi-location booking agent” or “Lead qualification assistant.” In the Agent Role section, write a one-liner about what this agent is supposed to do — and nothing more. That scope matters.
2. Add knowledge that grounds the agent
LLMs are powerful, but without business context, they guess. Go to the Knowledge Base tab and upload whatever the agent needs to know — PDFs, help docs, pricing pages, internal FAQs, even images and screenshots if that’s part of your ops.

If you’re building a CRM assistant (say, for HubSpot), upload onboarding docs, product info, and service policies. Tag each entry clearly, and create separate knowledge collections if you’re planning to build more agents later.
Make sure the KB only includes what’s relevant to the agent’s domain. That’s how you avoid scope drift and hallucinations.
3. Map out the business logic in the Flow Editor
This is where you move beyond conversation and into execution.
Head into the Flow Editor, and start building the structure: What info does the agent need to collect? What conditions should it check before proceeding? When does it escalate or stop?

You can use condition nodes, expressions, and variables — all of which can be powered by LLM logic to trigger and act without hardwiring — to make the logic feel dynamic but always scoped.
4. Add API access
Go to the Integrations panel and set up the API calls your agent will need. This could be a booking system (like Calendly or your internal scheduling API), a CRM endpoint, or even a support ticketing system.
- Base URL and auth headers
- Parameters (dynamic or static)
- Where to store the response (e.g. workflow.slotOptions)
- How to use that response in the flow (like displaying available times or submitting a form)
Once it’s working, wire your users into your workflow. Your agent now stops being “smart” and starts being useful.
5. Validate agent behavior
Use the Bot Emulator to run full conversations and debug in real-time. Break things on purpose: misspell entries, skip steps, give weird inputs. See how the agent recovers.
Then, add fallbacks. Add validations. Use conditional nodes to catch edge cases. If the user skips a required field, loop back with a friendly clarification that doesn’t break the conversation flow. If an API call fails, confirm the failures and communicate with the user the exact next steps.

Once tests are concluded, head over to the Home of the agent dashboard, and choose the channel you want to deploy the agent on.
